Boston, Mass.

Rain. Lots and lots of torrential rain. We sat on North Billerica station, waiting for the train, watching the rain. By the time we got to North Station in Boston it had slowed to a drizzle and within minutes the sun had come out and we were peeling off our waterproofs because we were boiling hot. It was very humid.

Boston is a lovely city – it felt like London with small, old buildings mixed in with more modern ones. We’d booked a trolley bus tour before arriving and it was great to hop on and off round the city.

Land of fire and ice …

Iceland. Rugged, brooding, mist shrouded. It was cold after the UK.

We hired a car, necessary to get around, and visited the land bridge where the American and European plates are pulling apart. It was very windy and quite chilly.tectonic plate bridge 2sm

There are few signs and no souvenirs. It’s just a little bridge across a not very deep ravine, but amusing to walk from the American plate to the Eurasian plate, and to be able to say you’d done so!

But the place to go when it’s a bit chilly is the Blue Lagoon. Warm/hot geothermal mineral waters. Like a huge, healthy bath.

The lagoon can be seen from the outside, but from the inside it’s amazing. After getting changed, and showering naked (compulsory!), I walked down the steps and into the lagoon area in a towelling robe, available to be used freely.

Stepping into the lagoon was like walking into a very large, perfect bath. The warmth envelops you and you can float, without any effort, due to the high mineral content of the pale, grey-blue water. It tasted very salty and the air is ripe with sulphur. It was like being in a different world.

The size means that although, there were a lot of people in there, it did not feel crowded; quite the reverse. Areas of the water are hotter than others, not that I minded, but some may find it uncomfortable. There are separate pools to lie in and a waterfall to stand underneath, and round one of the edges are buckets of mud for applying to your face and body. Total spa treatment!

Getting out was not so pleasant with temperatures around 14 degrees. The showers are equipped with plentiful supplies of shower gel and hair conditioner, but my hair still felt like straw afterwards.

After that we were off to Reykjavik. This is the capital city and houses approx. 60% of the population of Iceland. The Hallgrimmskirkja dominates the city and is an architectural marvel.

From the front it’s an elongated fluted triangle, the tower is very tall – and has a lift for visitors to get an aerial view over Reykjavik.

Friday 19th July 2013

Last day of work, odd finishing before the end of term, and left hoping I didn’t forget to do something …

Had my first spray tan to bring my pale body up to hot, sunny holiday standards. It had better not get washed down the drain in the morning!

I am taking a lot of focals away with me, to have as swap beads at the Gathering. I do hope people will swap with me, even though it’s not official swap day.

So now I just have to hope I don’t forget anything vital.

Wednesday 17th July 2013

I’m pleased the hot weather has arrived at last. It would have been odd, for me, going from the disappointing temperatures we were having earlier in July to the much hotter ones we are heading for. Gave me the chance to try out my new holiday clothes which head for the suitcase at the earliest opportunity.

I won’t be going on my torch until we are back now. Too much else to do. But I have a big stash of focals to take to the Gathering  for swaps and, if I don’t swap them all, I have a big stash of focals to sell when I come back.  I’ve really enjoyed using my new pastille press from Perlenpresse, the shape is easy to use and has provided my imagination with a new canvas.

Upcoming trip to America

At the end of the week we are off to America, calling in for a day to Iceland to visit the Blue Lagoon and Geyser.
It’s a three week trip with highlights of the Gathering in Rochester, Niagara Falls and Chelsea v Inter Milan in Indianapolis.
I’ll (hopefully) be posting lots of photos and will be keeping a running account of where we are and what we are doing.
This a special holiday, celebrating 25 years of marriage to my gorgeous husband Graeme.

Update

I bought a tutorial on shards and have been hooked ever since and have made little else all week. Luckily it’s half term, with few commitments, so have had time to experiment with my own colours. Some have worked, some really haven’t!  As I’m lousy at cleaning beads, they haven’t made it as far as the camera yet but I’m getting there.
I’ve also been trying to come up with a really cool bead for the GBUK ompetition. That hasn’t gone quite so well as what is in my head isn’t translating so well into glass. Could be I won’t be entering this year.

Belated news

Crikey, it’s been a year since I wrote anything. Didn’t that fly!
What has happened in the last 12 months?
Becky has set up her own social media/event management company (clever girl) and Geran is in his second year at Derby. I completed and passed my diploma, for all the good that did, but it’s done and dusted.
Beadwise I did a class with Paati Walton at Flame Off, and a couple with Di East. I learnt something at each one, just need the time to practice.

The fairs have been a mixed bag with Lincoln practically clearing us of stock whilst in Harrogate we couldn’t give it away. Ah well, hopefully 2013 will be more consistent.

A new year

What a busy year 2011 was, and so far 2012 is following in its footsteps.
Not made many beads, no inspiration, mojo – you name it, it’s not there.

Geran is very happy at Derby, Becky has temporarily finished her stint in London & is off back to Durham for a bit.

I’ve been studying hard, maybe I can’t manage study & beads, so come April/May I should be fine 🙂

The bead fair season for Fyrebirds starts in a couple of weeks, just as well I have plenty of stock. Kempton is a long drive, coming home all in the dark, so can’t say it’s my favourite but I do get to spend the night at Mum & Dad’s so not all bad.

29th August 2011

Long long time since I posted on here. The school holidays are over in 2 days & then I’ll have to go back to work.

Lots of things have happened.

Becky graduated from Durham and is off to London, Geran is going to Derby University.

I’m going to be home alone with Graeme & Jack the cat. It’s going to be lonely 🙁

I will still have my glass. I took a couple of classes with Di East (my first ever) and have learnt a little about making aquatic paperweights. Very exciting stuff. I have made two so far and I’m reasonably pleased with both. Just need to get rid of a few of those bubbles.

It’s my birthday!

My birthday and I’m now older than I like to think about!

Lots of lovely pressies, cards and good wishes from lots of friends which made me very happy.

I went to Harrogate Bead Fair, with my fellow Fyrebird Shirley, at the weekend and we sold more than last year which is very encouraging. Had a wicked Indian meal on Saturday night with some great people and stayed in a very comfortable hotel.

Not long til Flame Off now, about 4 weeks – and by then I need to be stocked up again. Lots more hours at the torch, not that I mind at all!
